It must also be in compliance with state and local codes for health and safety. Your landlord must make a rental unit fit to live in before renting anyone the unit. Your landlord must also make any necessary repairs while you and your children are living there, if it becomes unfit.

In order to make a claim against your landlord for slum housing, you must first notify them of the problems.
